Cold fronts sweep into China

Updated: 2010-10-22

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Cold weather fronts swept into northern China over the weekend, cutting average temperatures by 3 to 6 degrees Celsius. And the current falls may indicate an early winter for the region.

Over the past two days, Menyuan county in northwest China's Qinghai province has been blanketed by heavy snow, following recent rain and snow storms. However, experts are highlighting the advantages, saying snowfall at this time of year is good for the soil.

In the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, temperatures fell to minus seven in some cities. Temperatures have also dropped significantly in neighboring Jilin and Liaoning. Meanwhile, from China's southwest to the east, many regions are being affected by heavy fog. Weather authorities, say the cold fronts will continue over the coming 3 days, with further falls in temperatures of between 3 and 10 degrees.
