Early snow hits NE China

Updated: 2010-10-13

North eastern China's Mohe County in Heilongjiang Province has embraced its heaviest snowfall of the autumn. In other parts of China, fog is spreading, causing transport authorities to take measures to ensure traffic safety.

The snow in Mohe has come about 10 days earlier than normal and the temperature has slumped to minus ten degrees Celsius. Local authorities have issued an orange alert, the second highest, to warn people to look after themselves. The government has also issued emergency precautions to prevent possible disruption after traffic was blocked and trees damaged. Flights have also been cancelled at Mohe airport.

Meanwhile, most of northern and southwestern China are shrouded in mist. Visibility has fallen to as little as 500 meters as the air quality deteriorates. Some areas of Liaoning, Anhui, and Hubei Provinces are also blanketed in thick smog.
