NE China wants to increase grain production

2015-11-26

The government of Jilin province has looked for ways to increase its grain production over the last five years, thanks to farming reforms with China's 12th Five-year Plan (2011-2015) as a guideline.

Last year managed to produce about 70 billion kilograms, an increasing of almost 15 billion kilograms over the 2011 figure.

The provincial government places importance on agricultural modernization and rural land reforms to make farmer’s more enthusiastic about their work, with a shift in the management scale from individual households to cooperatives, where mechanization has increased efficiency. The number of agriculture cooperatives reached 55,000 in 2015, or almost double the 2011 figure.

Farmers in Jilin province have been encouraged to get a mortgage on their land so they can get financing for more plots and raise their incomes.

In addition to increasing efficiency and productivity, the government has done a lot to protect the rich, dark soil from erosion, and encouraged the use of organic fertilizers to improve the soil and land.

One provincial grain bureau official says, "The overall grain situation in Jilin this year is the same as for last year, with around 70 billion kilograms."
