Zhangjiagang, a port city in East China's Jiangsu province, launched a campaign on March 5 to commemorate this year's "Learn from Lei Feng Day".
Learn From Lei Feng Day memorializes Lei Feng (1940-1962), a legendary Chinese soldier who selflessly helped others during his short lifetime.
The Zhangjiagang government awarded some outstanding volunteers in 2017 to advocate the Lei Feng spirit.
A volunteer bazaar was also staged at the campaign, divided into four functional areas. Over 300 volunteers from 80 local organizations attended the event to support local residents.
In the area of charity sales, volunteers sold products like daily life goods, DYI products, books, and clothes, raising money for good causes.
Volunteers in the service experience area helped residents with free medical treatment and first aid training and food safety issues, such as how to detect pesticide residues on local produce.
In the media exhibition area, one hundred photos depicted the volunteer deeds done to honor Lei Feng from 1963 to 2018.
A free city brochure was also handed out to local residents. It offered useful advice and information on important issues such as avoiding financial fraud, installing basic living facilities, sorting trash, obtaining utility services and food safety issues.
The event aims to encourage more people to engage in public activities in the spirit of Lei Feng.
