Innovation has reached new heights in the city of Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province. Enterprises of the city's pillar industry, the garment industry, are making their mark in intelligent design.
Approximately 45 percent of enterprises in Zhangjiagang have adopted intelligent design to avoid costly work, accelerate project cycles and product launch times, and ultimately gain the competitive advantage.
Dongdu Textile Group is one of the examples. It has introduced 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software from a French company, helping its designers to improve their efficiency. Six garment patterns that previously required three designers to work on over the course of a day can be finished in an hour by one designer.
Dongdu has also adopted a 3D fitting system that can present a fitting effect on the screen of a device by inputting a 2D garment pattern. The intelligent design system has helped Dongdu improve work efficiency by 30 percent and output 20 percent. It has also helped reduce energy consumption by 10 percent.
Newamstar Packaging Machinery Co, a leader of China's high-end liquid(beverage)packaging machinery industry, has also benefited from intelligent design. In 2011, the company bought 100 sets of 3D design software to stimulate design and packaging procedures.
"The traditional bottle design procedure takes up one month and includes design drawing, model making and production. Now the 3D software enables us to design a 3D bottle model in the system and produce a real one with a 3D printer within three days," said He Jianfeng, Newamstar's manager.
With an array of quality designs and products, Newanstar has partnered with many well-known companies, such as Coca Cola; Wahaha, a large food and beverage corporation; and Tingyi Holding Corp, a leading food and beverage producer.
The main use of the software is to predesign projects in 3D to avoid potential problems and test the design before the manufacturing phase. This helps to lower costs and save time and money for enterprises.
Government authorities are planning to launch support policies and provide intelligent design training to encourage citywide adoption of intelligent design and boost industrial transformation.
