The water transport bureau in Zhangjiagang launched a campaign on May 29 to prevent river pollution and improve the water environment.
The water transport officers went on all the ships anchored around the Zhangjiagang ship lock and distributed biodegradable garbage bags to ship owners. The promotion was carried out to enhance the awareness of environmental protection and protect water resources.
Yan Yinbao, one of the ship owners, praised the promotion activity. He said: "The green garbage bags will provide us with convenience. The water environment depends on public efforts, and we should work together to make the river water clean."
In addition, the officers handed out brochures and held lectures to strengthen promotion of the ecological environment. Some special dustbins are provided in ship locks, ports and harbors. An "old-for-new" service is being offered for garbage bags. Boat people will be able to get new bags with the old ones.
According to the water transport bureau, any violator that destroys river water will face a warning and fines.
