The rice yield per mu (667 square meters) of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, reached 606.5 kilograms last year, maintaining a high level of productivity.
The rice consumption of Wuxi is 2 million tons per year, 40 percent of which is locally produced. The direct seeding area of grain in Wuxi was 1.53 million mu, decreasing by over 1 million mu compared with the 1970s and 1980s.
Despite the long storage of grain, Wuxi should increase the grain self-sufficiency rate to avoid a shortage. To maintain food production, Wuxi should perfect the planning of food-production; encourage cultivated land circulation; set up more farmers' cooperation organizations; and promote the intensification, scale and modernization of food production, according to the officials of the Wuxi municipal agricultural commission.
The former Wuxi New District, now known as Wuxi Xinwu district or Wuxi National Hi-tech district, was founded in 1992 and underwent administrative changes in 1995, 2002 and 2005.
