The Life of Clay, an exhibition of Huishan Clay Figurines, showcased various clay sculptures from Huishan in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, at the Chinese National Academy of Arts from June 6 to 16.
Over 120 skillful works made by 50 artists since the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) were displayed, coming from the Wuxi Huishan Clay Figurine Factory.
Taking the history and development of Huishan clay figurines as the skeleton, the exhibition was divided into three parts, telling the story of their formation, inheritance and innovation.
Huishan clay figurines have a recorded history of 400 years. The clay in the region is excellent for the craftsmen to create smooth, colorful and vivid figurines, as well as the lovable and well-known "Da A Fu", which represents a hard-working spirit, kindness, happiness and a helpful personality.
