A number of flood control measures adopted by the municipal government of Taicang, Jiangsu province took effect on the morning of June 29, following a deluge of rain.
In light of the annual rainy season from mid-June to late-July, Taicang's flood control unit has taken on several tasks to prevent floods.
Sluice gates on Liuhe River along the city's main waterways started to open twice a day (with the arrival of the tides), from June 15 to June 30.
Fresh rainfall from June 25 till June 29 pushed the water level to 30 centimeters above the warning line but the situation was soon stabilized with the opening of the sluice gates.
Embankments around low-level farm lands were patrolled on a regular basis. Dike structures have been reinforced in areas that had been worst-hit.
Quarters prone to flooding in the downtown area have been under regular surveillance and no severe waterlogs have been identified so far. Several small-scale waterlogs have been cleared shortly after being spotted.
Makeshift shelters have been arranged for those who are currently residing in condemned buildings in every town within Taicang because these constructions would be the most vulnerable ones if a flood ever takes place. According to the Chinese language Taicang Daily, flood prevention materials are in adequate supply and flood relief task forces have been readied.
According to the city's flood control department, the recent bouts of downpours have been less severe than the last episode of heavy rainfall because the rainfall was not continuous.
