A ceremony launching the fourth annual Social Sciences week was held at the Huaxi Community of Huaqiao economic development zone on Sunday morning.

The 2008 Awards for Academic Achievements in Social Sciences research were presented. Those involved in building platforms for the promotion of philosophy and social sciences were also praised.

With the overall theme of building up the values and culture of the Kunshan locals, the week will display great changes to the city’s Che County, which was established 20 years ago,in the following week. The event includes a series of activities, including artistic performances, photo tour exhibitions, lectures on the social sciences and public gatherings in a town square.

Tang Naixin, vice director of the managing committee of Huaqiao economic development zone, addressed the opening ceremony. He spoke highly of Huaqiao’s contributions to the promotion of social sciences, giving it the title of “Kunshan’s publicity base of social sciences”.

But, he said, the development of social sciences is also met with new problems and bottlenecks in Huaqiao’s rapidly changing environment. He urged Huaqiao International Service Business Park to tackle the problems and build Huaqiao into a charming and lively service industry cluster.

Hang Ying, director of Kunshan publicity department, also attended the ceremony and officially launched the event.

The Kunshan fourth annual Social Sciences week was jointly organized by Kunshan Publicity Department and the Social Sciences Association in honor of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the founding of Che County in Kunshan city.

The social sciences are the fields of scientific knowledge and academic scholarship that study social groups and, more generally, human society. The social sciences initially were constituted of five fields: Jurisprudence and Amendment of the Law; Education; Health; Economy and Trade; Art.

The contemporary field of sciences comprise academic disciplines concerned with the study of the social life of human groups, animals and individuals. This includes anthropology, archaeology, philology, communication studies, cultural studies, demography, economics, human geography, history, linguistics, media studies, political sciences, psychology, social work, and sociology.
