Since 1981, the National People's Congress has promulgated the Resolution on the Implementation of the National Voluntary Tree Planting Campaign.

A total of 349 million people took part in voluntary tree-planting activities, establishing roughly 1,853 planting bases during the last 30 years in Guizhou.

The total number of trees planted voluntarily has reached 2.08 billion, the Forestry Department of Guizhou province announced.

In the early 1980s, Guizhou's forest coverage was only 16.4 percent. By the end of 2012, the rate has increased to 42.5 percent.

In recent years, Guizhou province has invested 920 million yuan ($148.02) in green channel construction and 416 million yuan in greening cities, towns, suburbs and villages.

With the increased forest coverage, the residential environment of Guizhou has improved. Guiyang and Zunyi, Guizhou province, have been recognized as "National Forest Cities".
