Top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday urged the government to thoroughly implement the Scientific Outlook on Development, a guiding ideology of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in order to unify China's economic development and environmental protection efforts.
Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remark in a written statement delivered at a conference on environmental protection that opened Friday in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou province.
The conference has been held annually in Guiyang since 2009.
This year's conference attracted government officials, scholars and businessmen from around the world, including Minister of Health Chen Zhu and former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Jia said the annual conference should continue to serve as an important platform to draw more attention to ecological conservation in China and promote the creation of an "environmentally friendly society."
On Monday, President Hu Jintao said in a speech that China will continue to firmly implement the Scientific Outlook on Development, as the ideology has allowed the country to make significant progress in recent years.
