Lanzhou fines sewage plant $1.2 million for high emissions

A sewage treatment plant in Lanzhou’s Yuzhong county has been fined 8.4 million yuan ($1.2 million) for releasing high levels of emissions.

An investigation by the county’s environmental protection bureau found that emissions from the Xiaguanying Sewage Treatment Plant had exceeded permitted levels during the second quarter of 2016.

According to the bureau, the plant in question is operated by Yuzhong Development Investment Company.

The local authorities in the Gansu province are making great efforts to crack down on polluters and turn Lanzhou into an eco-friendly and comfortable city.

Lanzhou’s efforts to protect its water resources were also given a boost recently by the central government’s announcement that it will invest 430 billion yuan on 4,800 projects to improve the quality of scarce water resources across China.

The first batch of projects will include works to protect the Liujiaxia Reservoir in Gansu province, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
