Northwest China's Gansu province conducted a range of activities at Lanzhou city's Dongfanghong Square on May 12 to inform citizens of disaster prevention procedures. The activities were held to mark the National Day for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

The event is themed around taking scientific precautions against disasters and handling disasters properly. Several Gansu government departments took part in the activities, including the Gansu Meteorological Bureau. The staffs imparted rescue and first aid knowledge to the public.

Staff of the Earthquake Museum gave out disaster prevention and reduction pamphlets and gave awards to participants who gave correct answer to questions about earthquake prevention and first aid.

The National Day for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation falls on May 12 and commemorates the Wenchuan earthquake, which struck on May 12, 2008 in southwest China's Sichuan province. The State Council authorized the day to remember with the intent to strengthen disaster prevention measures and carry out the reconstruction of stricken areas.
