Pingtan is aiming to become the first city in Fujian province to develop an integrated smart power grid, with Chinese power company State Power Investment Corporation set to start work on the island city's first smart power station in April.
Located in the Jinjing Bay district, the power station will have a generating capacity of 10.3 KW and will supply electricity and gas to residents within a 1.5-kilometer radius once it becomes operational in May 2018.
The facility will also be fitted with cutting-edge big data and internet of things technology, allowing it to function as part of a smart grid, adjusting its power generation according to the level of demand and the supply of electricity coming from the city's many renewable energy projects.
