Typhoon Soudelor batters Pingtan

As one of the most powerful typhoons in Fujian in recent years, Soudelor has devastated coastal regions including Pingtan county, local media reported.

About 220,000 people in Pingtan, 52 percent of the population, were affected by the typhoon, resulting in a direct economic loss of 222 million yuan ($35 million) as of Monday afternoon, said local social affairs bureau.
Soudelor, which landed in the neighboring Putian city on Saturday night, also forced evacuation of some 12,000 people and caused damage to more than 13,000 houses.
Furthermore, about 4,500 hectares of croplands and 86,000 trees were affected. The fishery industry reported an estimated loss of 107 million yuan. 32 electricity poles were toppled by gales, leading to a blackout for 21,000 households.
Electricity in the urban district resumed on Monday, authorities said, adding that other post-disaster work is being carried out.
