1. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pingtan on Nov 1. He called on preservation of the ecological environment in Pingtan, and gave instructions on how to build Pingtan into an international tourism island.
2. Authorities set up the Tourism Development Committee and the Pingtan Tourism Development Bureau for development of the tourism industry. They also set up a company to integrate tourism resources and build a financing platform.
3. Business promotion of tourism projects made progress. The duty-free Taiwanese Commodity Market was inaugurated in June. The construction of the Haitan Ancient City, a large tourism complex, is due for completion by May.
4. The overall planning of Pingtan’s tourism development has been completed.
5. Pingtan is promoting rural tourism. Five villages – Doukui, Dongmei, Shanmen, Qingguanding and Baisha – have made it onto the national list of traditional Chinese villages. Pingtan has also invited Taiwanese tourism experts to give suggestions on rural tourism development.
6. Pingtan became the guest of city of the 10th Xiamen Cross-Straits Tourism Expo, which opened on Sept 8, 2014. Designers showcased their unique tourism resources such sea erosion landforms, beaches, and stone folk dwellings at the expo.
7. The International Marine Tourism Economy Forum was convened in Pingtan on Dec 19, 2014. Experts from home and abroad explored the development of Pingtan’s tourism industry.
8. Wu Xuewen, deputy director of the National Tourism Bureau inspected Pingtan.
9. Cross-Straits cultural and sports events were increasingly held in Pingtan, such as a swimming relay across the Taiwan Straits and a cycling race attended by cross-Straits workers.
10. Pingtan promoted tourism through a variety of activities, including a photo exhibition, a reality show in cooperation with Xiamen TV, a cycling race on the 4th China Tourism Day, and a series of promotional events in more than 20 cities on the Chinese mainland.
