Pingtan county in Fujian province said on Jan 12 that it will hold an urban sculpture exhibition "in the middle of the year".
The Pingtan Times quoted Wang Tianjun, assistant to the director of the local city planning museum, as saying that the First Pingtan International Urban Sculpture Exhibition will probably kick off during the planned sand sculpture exhibition and kite surfing festival.
Organizers of the exhibition started soliciting works from home and abroad in June last year, and chose a total of 44 works out of 1,242 submissions from 476 sculptors in 61 countries and areas – in addition to 6 works by established artists.
The organizers plan to display large versions - about three to four meters in height - of the 50 selected works at the city planning museum prior to the event.
The larger versions will remain after the event in a sculpture park that is being built at Haiyu Square, a beach resort in Pingtan.
Cao Chunsheng, a professor at China's Central Academy of Fine Arts and one of the exhibition curators, said urban sculpture is aimed at public spaces and is "an integral part of urban development," which can add to a city's cultural life – and also sometimes become a symbol of the city.
