The closing ceremony of the first cultural festival organized by a school for the elderly in Pingtan county, East China's Fujian province, was held on Oct 15, with students displaying their calligraphic works, paintings, paper-cuttings, and plants.

The cultural festival started in May and included various activities, such as calligraphy, lectures and art performances. A total of 180 students are enrolled in the school and, though they are mature students, they still enjoy learning.

Wu Zhengshou, the school's head, said at the closing ceremony that the event aimed to improve the health of the students, enrich their lives – and also to offer them a chance to express themselves.
