Tulou, or earthen houses, are widely scattered in Yongding and Nanjing counties, Fujian province. Set amongst rice, tea and tobacco fields, the tulou feature tall fortified mud walls capped by tiled roofs with wide over-hanging eaves. They are inscribed as exceptional examples of a building tradition and function exemplifying a particular type of communal living and defensive organization and in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment are an outstanding example of human settlement.

The scenic spot highlighting a group of well-preserved tulou situated in Hukeng village, Hukeng town in Yongding is listed as a national 5A attraction, the highest level in China.
