Fujian is set to seek high-quality real economy development powered by innovation in the new era, pledged Yu Weiguo, Party chief of the Fujian CPC standing committee.

The real economy of high standards plays a pivotal role in Fujian's economic growth, Yu noted in an interview with Xinhua News Agency on March 30 in Fuzhou, the capital city.

The province will push ahead with the supply-side reform, he said, adding that it will put further efforts in cutting overcapacity in bloated industries like steel and coal while nurturing new driving forces.

"Fujian has plenty of traditional industries, but 'traditional' doesn't mean 'declining'," he said, calling for more efforts in industrial transformation and upgrading.

The traditional sectors in the province include textiles, sports goods and construction materials.

Meanwhile, Fujian plans to further the development of three pillar industries, namely, electronic information, machinery manufacturing and petrochemicals.

Following global trends closely, it also eyes on cultivating a batch of emerging high tech industries, including biomedicine, new energy and new materials, according to Yu.

He also attached great importance to innovation, saying companies are the most active innovators. "There are numerous small-and micro-companies in Fujian, and their development to bigger ones is inseparable with innovation."

According to the Party chief, Fujian government will offer more incentives to motivate innovation among companies. To date, more than 400 businesses have applied for government subsidies to encourage scientific and technological R&D in the province.
