Lu Yusheng, a deputy to the 13th National People's Congress, called for more efforts in the protection of the unique folk buildings called "Zhuangzhai" in Yongtai, Fujian province.
Lu made the remarks in an exclusive interview with People.cn on the sidelines of the annual legislative session in Beijing.
"Zhuangzhai" are ancient fortified buildings scattered across the mountains of Yongtai. The buildings not only conserve the architectural art and craftsmanship of its era, but also represent folk culture.
Lu is worried that many of the buildings, which are in desperate need of repair, will collapse soon. He expressed his hope that the government, as well as members of society, could pay a greater deal of attention to the protection of “Zhuangzhai” in terms of practical measures.
