The Chinese government needs to find a solution to solve the education problems faced by left-behind children in regions inhabited by ethnic groups, said Guo Wensheng, member of the National Committee of the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference from Fujian province.

“As the number of left-behind children in these regions grows, improving the education of left-behind children will be significant for the improvement of China’s overall education quality,” said Guo.

In his proposal, Guo suggested for the government to open and promote boarding schools and establish research teams to find more detailed solutions to the problems that these children face. Guo also calls for an education system for left-behind children that combine the efforts of the family, the school and society. He said that increasing the number of jobs in these regions is fundamental to solving the problem.

Left-behind children refer to the children who are left behind by their parents in rural areas in China. Their parents have to migrate to work in cities, thus the children are usually taken care of by their grandparents.

Statistics show that China has roughly 9 million left-behind children aged younger than 16, about 5.88 million of them are primary and secondary school students.
