The so called “hometown of the Red Army”, Sidu county, Longyan city in Fujian province was once the scene of some of the most violent conflict in the 20th century during the Chinese war of liberation. And one tenth of the population didn't survive the bloodshed.
More than 80 years on, Sidu has made a full recovery from its sorrowful past with a booming economy and developing industries.
A media delegation visited the Sidu county on Aug 23 to retrace the footsteps of the Red Army and investigate developments in the area.
Firstly, the delegation noticed the large amount of income and wealth that has been generated through developments in agriculture, greatly enhancing general levels of social welfare.
The county’s Tongren village founded an orchid cooperative in 2013 which has lifted many villagers out of poverty and vastly improved living conditions.
Liao Yanshi, head of the cooperative said, “The orchids are grown in forests without destroying green vegetation. The planting model is sustainable and suits orchids’ growth patterns.”
Liao said that the cooperative provides free orchid seedlings to those in poverty. The members are also given advice and guidance on planting, selling and distribution.
With regards to sales channels, the Liao said, “We now also sell our products online which has greatly boosted sales.”
According to recent figues, sales of orchids from Tongren village have risen to 30,000 yuan ($4,500) per month.
