Xiamen launches strictest ever traffic amendments on January 1st

New traffic rules, which are now at their strictest ever in town, were implemented at the beginning of this year as follows:

1) RMB 100 fine for jaywalkers who ignore red lights

2) RMB 200 fine (double the original fine) for drivers who stop their vehicles on prohibited roads

3) RMB 1,000 fine for drivers who park illegally in tunnels or on bridges and urban expressways. The fine for illegal parking doubles to RMB 2,000 after the third violation in a year.

However, implementation of the fine for jaywalkers has been lax. In one report, 63 pedestrians were spotted violating the red light traffic rule in 10 minutes, but no one was fined for the violation. Many of the residents in town are still unaware of the new rules.

Traffic experts have called for educating the public about the amended traffic rules. The implementation difficulty of the fine for jaywalkers arises partly because jaywalking tends to be a group activity, with pedestrians feeling more confident to violate the high cross code when in large crowds.
