A direct marine passenger route - from Huangqi peninsula in Lianjiang county, Fujian province to Taiwan-controlled Matsu Island - is expected to open on Dec 16.

The new route will shorten travel time between the two areas to 20 minutes, which means tourists can visit both places in one day. The one-way ticket will cost 135 yuan ($21.24).

Currently Fujian residents take ferries from Mawei district to Matsu Island, which take about one hour and 40 minutes. The new route is expected to boost tourism from both sides.

After the opening of the sea route, Lianjiang county will launch four tourist routes, covering hot springs, mountains, islands, coasts, food and culture.
