'Soudelor' - the strongest typhoon I have ever gone through

We now live in a WiFi era which has changed every aspect of our lives. Can you imagine a week without WiFi ? Can you imagine your home without warm water for days? And can you imagine that you don't have to go to your office but still have to handle your work with your little cellphone?

'Soudelor' - the strongest typhoon I have ever gone through
The flooded Jintang Road near my home.

At present, I’m still suffering from the difficulties Typhoon Soudelor brought six days ago. My home has no WiFi and no warm water ( I live in the hotspring district, so I didn’t install a water heater in my bathroom). I handle work through my cellphone, my eyes very dry and sore from spending too much time focused on the small screen. TV is only available through WiFi. Though I was quite safe on the 26th floor, all these inconveniences made me quite negative. I wasn’t in the mood for anything. People’s spirits can be easily destroyed if they have no water or electricity for 24 hours.

On Aug.8, Soudelor, the strongest typhoon in Fujian history hit the capital city Fuzhou. Though the storm only brushed Fuzhou, the city sunk into an ocean of heavy rainfall. Wusi Road, Hudong Road, the CBD of Fuzhou were the most seriously affected areas. Dozens of cars were drenched and the underground walkway along Wusi Road filled with rainwater. Many undergound parking lots of big buildings were flooded as well. My entire office building was paralyzed with no water and electricity. The management office told us the facilities would return to normal in at least a week. I was not happy about the news; work still needed to be done.

Before Soudelor, I was pleased to live in the CBD of a city with convenient transportation, easy access to big shopping malls and nice restaurants, and best of all, a home just 5-minutes-walk from my workplace. Great! Now I could look through my window, and see my office right there, but there was nothing I could do. How ironic!

On usual weekends, in the morning, I clean up my room, make nice Dahongpao tea, and watch my favorite TV series; in the afternoon; I cook myself a generous lunch; in the evening, I go for a walk in the hotspring park nearby and come back home to a pleasant hotspring bath and sweet music. The typhoon has taken away all my pleasures!

Thank Goodness, my phone was working with 4G. On typhoon night, my WeChat circle was the only way to see what was going on outside. I kept refreshing my WeChat friends circle and used the pictures and information as news resources. I hereby thank all my Wechat friends for contributing typhoon information and pictures to our China Daily Fujian website.
