An unexpected landslide hit a village in East China's Fujian province early Monday, damaging folk dwellings and blocking roads, local media reported.
The disaster occurred at around 3 am, following a thunderstorm that last more than two hours earlier that night, churning out a mix of earth, rocks and sludge that swamped more than 20 houses at the Shita Village in Longjuan township, Anxi county.
“We were at sleep when a big bang woke everybody up,” Mr. Wu, a villager recalled.
The first floor of Wu’s two-storied home was buried by rocks and mud, and more stunningly, a 15m trunk poked into the bedroom in the second floor. Luckily no one was inside it.
“It was my uncle’s room. He is working in Quanzhou. I can’t imagine what could’ve happened if he were in there.”
About 20 other houses at the village were damaged by the landslide to different degrees, whether it was cracks in the wall or crumpled windows. Massive mud also destroyed water pipes and blocked roads leading to the outside of the village.
