Some 150 volunteers took part in the campaign, jointly organized by the Pingtan Times and the Bureau of Forests and Parks, on a plot of barren land near the Haixia Bridge.
The volunteers came from all walks of life, including professionals, cyclists, teachers and businessmen.
Each sapling got a plaque written with information and good wishes from their respective growers.
"I am 'adopting' six trees on behalf my company, my children and myself. We will grow up together," said Deng Yonghan, a Taiwan entrepreneur.
Some cyclists attended. "Going on a tree-planting bike tour is a novel and interesting way to promote a low-carbon lifestyle," said Yan Bin, leader of the team.
Many enterprises pitched in as well. A local bus company provided free transportation for volunteers, and a mineral water producer gave away 200 bottles at the site.
