Ten winners of "Touching Fujian", an annual selection by Strait News in recognition of good deeds, were announced in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian, on Wednesday.
The results were based on polls of more than 5 million readers and internet users from both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
The following are the ten chosen role models:
Xie Qiao, 24, armed police soldier |
Growing up in a remote village in Ningde city, Xie was always devoted to helping other people, motivating him to join the border force in Southwest China's Yunnan province.
The 24-year-old lad died during a rescue mission in Ludian county, Yunnan, on August 4, 2014, the day after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake. He was hit by fallen rocks and fell into a barrier lake.
Liu Qianwen, 26, judicial assistant |
As unimportant as her job title seems at first glance, Liu has helped more than 100 prodigal sons over the past five years at a grassroots judicial office in Fuzhou.
Liu provides education and psychological consultation to low-level offenders on probation, helping them prepare to return to society.
Fujian Mountain Rescue Team |
The accomplishments of the Fujian Mountain Climbing Association rescue team speak for themselves. The team of unpaid volunteers saved 465 lives over the last 13 years. Whenever there is an emergency on a mountain in Fuzhou, the "flying tigers" come to the rescue.
On weekends, the volunteers receive rescue trainings at a base. They also travel to remote areas to practice rescues..
"It is hard to describe how much pleasure and fulfillment you can get from a successful mission," said a member Huang Zhanping, "by saving a person's life, you get emotional yourself, too."
