Gulangyu to build more public restrooms

There are currently 21 public restrooms on Gulangyu Island. 3 new public restrooms will be added at Bishan Park, Gangzaihou Bathing Beach and on Fuzhou Road.

The total number of public restrooms on Gulangyu Island is expected to amount to 325 by the end of 2020.

After renovation, the public restrooms will have characteristics that better fit their surroundings.

In preparation for its UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage Site submission, Gulangyu launched a 3-year environmental remediation program, including the repairing of old buildings and construction of a Gulangyu History Museum, in 2011. In 2016, Gulangyu Island will compete with nine other Chinese cultural sites to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

On 13th March, the former Dutch Consulate on Gulangyu took the lead in opening its doors to the public after reconstruction, followed by 7 other old consulates which were open to the public after being turned into various museums.

There were once 13 foreign consulates on Gulangyu, and currently 8 of the buildings remain on the island.
