Canadian photographer Kevin Frayer won the photo of the year award, at the awards ceremony of the 10th China International Press Photo (CHIPP) Contest held in Quanzhou, Fujian Province on December 6.

Frayer's winning photo features the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines last year. It was also awarded the gold medal in the "War and Disaster News Stories" category.

According to Huang Wen, chairman of the CHIPP Contest organizing committee, this year’s contest has received more than 30,000 entries by more than 3,000 photographers from over 60 countries around the world.

63 works consisting of 347 photos were honored by the committee. And Chinese photographers won 11 awards, including three gold prizes, he added.

Wang Yixuan from The Beijing News won the prize for War & Disaster News Singles with a news picture of An Earthquake Survivor, which captured the image of a 19-year-old girl from Yongguang Village, Gansu Province sitting alone on a temporary sickbed, with a look of panic on her face.

The annual event has been held for 10 consecutive years since it was initiated by the China Photojournalists Society in 2005. Nowadays, it keeps gaining popularity in the field of photojournalists not only in China, but among professionals around the world.

Xu Zugen, director of the China Photojournalists Society and chairman of the CHIPP Organization Committee, said after the contest that this year's CHIPP reflects its motto of Peace and Development, while many of the entries can be considered as a mirror of the times and history.

A total of 230 awarded works have been selected to be exhibited in the China Museum for Fujian-Taiwan Kinship which will last until Dec 12.
