SEM, the largest motor company across the Straits
In 1995, South East Motor (SEM), the largest automotive joint venture across the Straights, was founded by Fujian Motor Industry Group Company and China Motor Industry Corporation. It is owned by Yulong Enterprise Group, the largest motor company in Taiwan. Fujian’s motor industry has been growing since then. SEM focuses on a pioneering strategy of overall planning, stepped implementation and rolling development.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, a strong cooperation
In 2006, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation became a shareholder of SEM. The move marked the start of SEM’s international cooperation. The Mitsubishi Lancer and Mitsubishi New Space Wagon, designed by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation for the Chinese market, were later launched.
Complete supply system
With an unprecedented strategy, 35 professional parts suppliers from Taiwan came and worked with SEM closely. They formed an automotive manufacturing zone with advanced international standards as well as independent development ability, bringing substantial support to the manufacturing of world-class vehicles. This “South East Model” has developed its own high-efficiency, low-cost and flexible production process. Moreover, SEM has chosen more than 100 domestic suppliers (including 35 suppliers in the South East Motor Zone) with high quality management to promote its quality and establish a stable base for manufacturing world class vehicles. With the completion of third and fourth stage construction in the following years, this modern zone, including an R&D center, 300,000 units of capacity, and dozens of professional suppliers, will be one of the most significant bases in the Chinese motor industry.
International manufacturing technology sets the pace
Taking advantage of cooperation across the Straights, SEM, utilizing the excellent management experiences from China Motor Industry Corporation and the advanced technologies from Mitsubishi Motors Cooperation, is employing leading equipment from Japan and Germany to build up a modern production process comprised of stamping, welding, painting, assembly and inspection. SEM has also set up a high standard quality assurance system. It is the first automotive company to pass the ISO9001 certification (2000 version). Thus, SEM is able to bring to market products with world-class quality.
SEM will continue advancing, innovating and developing an independent brand to implement its two-brand strategy and strengthen international cooperation. The completed SEM R&D center will lead SEM’s transformation from co-development to independent development by improving body and chassis system integration, derived model development ability, and power system matching ability.
