HKU and university rankings - Introduction
2011-Jan-27 17:38:18

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) consistently stands with the top universities in the world in major international ranking exercises.

The 2010-11 Times Higher Education World University Rankings

HKU was ranked no.1 in Asia and 21st in the world in the 2010-11 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, announced September 16, 2010.

These rankings are based on a new set of methodologies used by THE, which has ended its partnership with its former data supplier QS and has signed an agreement with Thomson Reuters.

The rankings use 13 performance indicators combined under five broad categories: "Citations - research influence", "Teaching - the learning environment", "Research - volume, income and reputation", "International mix - staff and students" and "Industry income - innovation".

The QS World University Rankings 2010

HKU was ranked no.1 in Asia and 23rd in the world in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2010, announced September 8, 2010.

The QS World University Rankings are a league table of the world's top universities, and are based on assessments of research quality, graduate employability, teaching commitment and internationalization at the respective institutions.

The QS Asian University Rankings 2010

HKU was ranked no.1 in Asia in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings 2010, announced May 13, 2010.

The QS Asian University Rankings have been compiled by QS using parameters that are considered to be more appropriate to institutions in this region. These parameters include assessing a combination of regional and international factors, such as regional peer and recruiter reviews, the international research capabilities of the institution, teaching quality, internationalization of the staff and students, and overseas exchange opportunities for students, among others.
