China Development Forum 2008 sponsored by Development Research Center of the State Council was held at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing from March 23th to 24th, with the theme of China 2020: Development Goals and Policy Options. Mr. Li Keqiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier, delivered a keynote speech during the opening ceremony of the forum. The annual event has taken place for the past nine years in succession since it was established in 2000, having served as a major platform of high-end exchanges and candid discussions between distinguished guests from Chinese and international business community, academia and government, focusing on issues of major significance to China’s reform and development. The subjects discussed in the forum of this year included Pursuing Sound yet Rapid Economic Development in China; Fostering an Innovation-oriented Nation: Policies and Progress; Building a Resource-Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Society; Building a Harmonious Society; China’s Consumption Market: Potential and Outlook; and China towards 2020: International Perspectives, etc. On March 22th, academic summit and CEO summit were convened as a warm-up of the forum. A number of high-profile Chinese guests attended the forum and delivered speeches, including Mr. Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress (NPC) and President of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Mr. Yang Jiechi, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Zhang Ping, Minister of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC); Mr. Zhang Guobao, Vice Minister of National Development and Reform Commission and Director of the Bureau of Energy, Mr. Zhou Shengxian, Minister of Environmental Protection; Mr. Chen Zhu, Minister of Health; Mr. Jiang Weixin, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction, Mr. Guo Jinlong, Mayor of Beijing; Mr. Xie Fuzhan, Commissioner of National Bureau of Statistics; Mr. Liu He, Vice Chairman of the Office for the Central Leading Group on Economic and Financial Affairs; Mr. Yu Guangzhou, Vice Minister of Commerce; as well as the preeminent guests from business circle, like Mr. Lou Jiwei, Chairman of China Investment Corporation and Levin Zhu, President of China International Capital Corporation Limited (CICC). Among those distinguished international guests participating in the forum were leaders of some international organizations including Mr. Haruhiko Kuroda, President of Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Angel Gurria, Secretary General of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD); The second group comprises reputable economists such as Prof. Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel Laureate in Economics; as well as the top leaders from over 50 large multinationals, such as HSBC, AIG, DuPond, JPMorgan, TESCO, Cargill, BASF, Vodafone, etc. Mr. Zhang Yutai, President of DRC and Charles O. Holliday, Chairman & CEO of DuPont, acted as the Chinese and international co-chairman respectively. Mr. Wang Mengkui, Chairman of Board of Trustees, China Development Research Foundation (CDRF), and other distinguished guests also participated in the meeting.
