Directed by the well-known Chinese director Ning Hao, Breakup Buddies, one of the most popular blockbuster in China took in over 1.1 billion yuan since its opening in 2014, and successfully became the year's top-grossing movie, ranking among the top sixbox office records in China, nearly followed by the Transformers: Dark of the Moon (1.08 billion yuan at the box office). Its outstanding box office performance also attracted the attention from Hollywood. According to Variety, IM Global, one of the world leading films financing, sales and distribution enterprises headquartered in Los Angeles, purchased the remake rights of the movie's English version. Famous for producing films such as Locke and Hummingbird, IM Global showed great interest in Chinese film market in recent years.
