Fair to commercialize innovation

A patent matchmaking fair titled "Innovation drives economic development" was recently held in the provincial capital Harbin displaying 230 of the latest technologies patented by local colleges, research institutes and companies. More than 100 patent transfer contracts with a total value of 20 million yuan ($3.3 million) were signed during the event. The city's IP administration said it will track the contracted projects to make sure the patents are successfully commercialized.

The West China National Copyright Trade Center was inaugurated during the Silk Road International Film Festival held from Oct 20 to 25 in the provincial capital Xi'an. The only national-level copyright trade agency in the western region, the company-operated center has the cultural and creative industry as its core business.

All-local server computers

A local high-tech company recently developed China's proprietary server computers based on the home-developed Loongson 3B CPU, which use homegrown technologies throughout the hardware and operating system. Sha Chaoqun, deputy head of the developer Sugon Co, said that the servers are crucial to national political, economic and information security.

Pearl River Delta IP conference

The 10th joint conference on IP cooperation in the pan-Pearl River Delta region was held recently in Zhongshan city. Delegates from nine provinces and regions on the Chinese mainland as well as Hong Kong and Macao agreed on plans for 2014 to 2016. More than 100 cooperation projects in the region have been implemented since the initiative started in 2004, including coordinated enforcement campaigns, trademark protection and copyright exchanges.

High-tech exhibit from Taiwan

A four-day exhibition of high-tech products from Taiwan was held last week in Hangzhou displaying 140 products selected by the Taipei World Trade Center from more than 1,200 entries. Representing the highest level in Taiwan's manufacturing, the exhibits included the world's first wheelchair that helps the user walk upright.

Younger cultural heritage experts

The cultural department of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region recently announced a list of 85 living inheritors of local intangible cultural heritage. Department officials said their average age was younger than those selected before and they are expected to be the main force keeping time-honored culture alive. The region now has 521 inheritors that each receive 4,800 yuan in subsidies annually.

Fake-branded children's shoes

Jinjiang police arrested a suspect surnamed Li and seized more than 7,000 fake-branded children's shoes last week in a warehouse. Labeled with famous international trademarks such as Nike, Adidas and New Balance, the counterfeits had a potential retail value of more than 3 million yuan. Police said Li admitted selling more than 4,000 pairs of the fake branded shoes online since March.
