Baidu ordered to pay $80,000 to Youku Tudou in video piracy case

Baidu, China’s largest search provider, was found guilty of infringing copyright and ordered to pay 491,000 yuan ($80,000) to online video site Youku Tudou. Beijing Haidian District People’s Court ordered Baidu to pay Youku Tudou for infringing copyright with regard to 18 TV dramas and various other video content uploaded to Baidu’s video service. The search giant was found to be illegally hosting 18 Chinese television dramas that Youku owned exclusive online broadcast rights to. The ruling was made as part of a joint lawsuit against Baidu which also includes Sohu, LeTV, Tencent, and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Other cases against Baidu are still awaiting judgment. The group of plaintiffs are suing the search provider for over 300 million yuan in compensation for losses allegedly caused by piracy on Baidu’s video service.
