Construction work on a new panda-themed library started in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province on April 18, with the library scheduled to open in 2018.
On the day the project launch, the organization behind the library sent an email to groups and personnel who care for pandas and wild animals, to start the process of collecting books and videos of pandas.
According to the report from Xinhua, the idea of launching a panda library came from the Chengdu Xiongmao Road Primary School students’ newsletter. The school is named Xiongmao –– the Chinese word for panda.
After learning about the animals, some students wrote a letter to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Huacheng district education bureau, putting forward their idea of launching a panda-themed library.
The first stage of construction will be launched at Xiongmao Road Primary School. In recent years, the primary school has cooperated with Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in providing science lessons for pupils.
According to Zhang Mingrong, headmaster of the school, the library is designed to be around 1,000 square meters with panda-themed books and videos in different languages.
