Chengdu Metro welcomed its one billionth passenger at 09:14 am on Nov 27, according to Xinhua. The city metro has been running for 1,887 days without accidents since its opening in 2010.
“I feel so lucky to witness this important moment for Chengdu Metro,” said Xiao Zuojia, the billionth passenger, with excitement.
The past five years have witnessed a rapid progress of Chengdu Metro. There are now Line 1 and its southward extension, Line 2 and its east and westward extensions, stretching out for about 88 kilometers in total. The Metro Line 4 is projected to open to traffic next month.
The number of passengers has also multiplied over the years. The daily passenger flow on Sept 27, 2010, the first day of the metro services, was 59,300. The number exceeded 827,200 at the opening of Line 1 southward extension on July 25, 2015.
On Sept 30, 2015, the daily passenger number reached 1.23 million, which is the highest so far in Chengdu.
Chengdu’s public transport authorities recently announced that they would initiate further improvement works across a number of stations to provide more convenience for residents.
