Nearly 140 current train drivers from different parts of China gathered in the Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) in Chengdu, Sichuan province, on Nov 23, to receive specialized training on high-speed train driving skills.

The drivers went through training in high-speed train driving simulator to practice how to control trains in extreme weather conditions and at speeds varying from 50 km per hour to 300 km per hour.

SWJTU has China’s first high-speed train driving simulator and is the only training center for the specialist train drivers. A total of 2,500 drivers are expected to be trained at SWJTU this year. Since its opening in 2006, the center has provided training for nearly 10,000 high-speed train drivers, according to Shi Nianzhong, a teacher at the training center.

The drivers attending the training course are required to have more than two years of train driving experience and a total of minimum 100,000 kilometers driving experience without accident. They also have to pass a physical and psychological test to prove that they are fit to drive the high-speed trains.
