Wang Guangqi's Memorial Hall and his school were selected as cultural landmarks of Wenjiang district in Chengdu, Sichuan province.
Wang Guangqi, born in Wenjiang in 1892, was the first musicologist in Chinese modern musical history to gain widespread recognition.
He studied in Germany and promoted the creation of a new Chinese culture based on global standards during the New Culture Movement of the mid 1910s and '20s. He also introduced European comparative musicology theory, laying the foundation of musicology in China.
The Wang Guangqi Memorial Hall was built in 1987 in memory of Wang and his contribution to Chinese music. Located in Wenjiang People’s Park, the memorial hall is a two-story classical building. His life story, important writings and research articles are on display on the first floor. The second floor exhibits poems, essays, paintings and calligraphy about Wang.
On the east side of the Guangqi Lane stands an old-style private school, where Wang studied for five years. Here, he met his private tutor Huang Yushan and was greatly inspired.
