"The Call of Love," a musical based on 6.26 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, made its debut at the Youth Center in the Wenjiang district of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province on Tuesday.
A joint effort between the district's drug control committee and Chengdu Normal University, with students of the Visual and Performing Arts Department making up the cast, the musical tells the story of Lu Xiaodong, whose father is in jail because of fraud and whose mother is a drug addict.
Lu is a high school student who is often abused and is desperate to lead a normal life. He rebuilds his confidence with the help of teachers and local communities.
The audience was touched by the performance and realized the positive role arts can play in publicizing the harm drugs cause.
Hu Kaiyong, leader of the Wenjiang standing committee, spoke afterwards, urging the promotion of education in drug control and calling for more severe punishments to be given to drug producers and dealers.
