"Sugar sculpture" is a popular, old Sichuan province folk craft that can be consumed. The craftsman takes some melted sugar and fashions it into a small lump, the size of a coin, on a marble slab, and sticks it on a thin bamboo skewer then lets it cool. It is sweet and crisp and a special favorite of children.
The craftsman can also fashion the melted sugar into various fantastic shapes, such as a dancing butterfly or flying dragon, or the simple, honest novel hero Zhubajie, or clever Sunwukong. The sculptures seem to come alive and make the sugary lumps a work of art. As the sugar cools, the sugar sculpture can be put on a bamboo skewer so people can taste its crispy sweetness while appreciating the interesting work.
