Ever since construction started in 2009, the former Hefei Art Gallery has been called the "Hefei Bird's Nest" thanks to its unique shape. But since 2011, when construction completed, it has been closed for repair, and the official name was never determined.
Recently, the gallery was named the New Hefei Cultural Center and the Hefei Public Cultural Activities Center.
The center's sign is already up, but the doors are still closed. Repair work has been finished but staff refuse to provide more details about its opening.
The decision of moving the cultural center came as a result of traffic issues with the former center and the impending transformation work of Chenghuang Temple around it. The new site will be more convenient for holding public cultural activities.
Presently, preparatory staff are in the center preparing for the move and interior transformations. Though the specific date has yet to be decided, the move will surely happen in 2014. After that, the center will hold cultural events such as temple fairs and singing contests.
