Starting on Oct 1, Huangshan Mountain in East China's Anhui province will set its daily maximum capacity at 50,000 for ordinary days and 35,000 in adverse weather conditions.
The move comes as the Tourism Law of the People's Republic of China comes into effect during the National Day holiday.
The law stipulates that tourism sites should issue early warnings to the public if the number of visitors is expected to reach maximum capacity to keep tourists better informed and ensure their safety against the backdrop of the country's tourism craze, which is especially apparent during public holidays.
The world-renowned scenic spot will welcome 50,000 visitors at most every day, but when it is hit by thunderstorms, gales, dense fog and hailstorms, the daily capacity will be capped at 35,000, local authorities said.
"The restriction on the number of tourists to the mountain can not only prevent the ecological environment from being damaged by excessive visitors, but also ensure visitors' safety and the quality of tourism," said an official of the scenic area.
Also, Xidi and Hongcun, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites located near the mountain, announced their maximum capacity would stand at 20,000 and 26,000, respectively.
