The Ruins of the Golden Bull Cave Mining Site, 34km from the city proper of Tongling, is located in Phoenix village, Xinqiao township, Tongling county. It got its name from the Golden Bull Cave on the mountain-side in the west. Now it is a key historical monument under state protection.
Since 1987, the Anhui Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Tongling Administration of Cultural Heritage have excavated the mining site time and again. The ancient mine shafts and a collection of mining tools have been unearthed.
Additionally, many mining sites and piles of slag left from ancient times have also been discovered in Yaoyuan, Huxing, and Wanying mountains, which are close to the Golden Bull Cave Mining Site. All these bear witness to the time-honored mining and smelting industry of Tongling.
As a well-preserved, large-sized and representative mining site of ancient times in the Yangtze River valley, the Golden Bull Cave Mining Site has an important historical value in the research on China's bronze culture and its mining and smelting history. Now it has become an important tourist attraction of cultural relics in Tongling.
