Out and about

By Matt Hodges | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2014-07-31 17:05

Here's a selection of events for you to enjoy the weekend in Shanghai.

Wei China Tour

Expect solemn musical madness from this spiritual new age band (wei means trivial in Chinese) with equal parts rock and poetry thrown into the mix. Frontman, poet and performance artist Maizi made a name for the band over a decade ago with the release of the group’s debut album Water. Tickets cost 60 yuan presale or 80 yuan at the door.

Midnight, Friday, Aug 1, A2-101 Red Town, 570 Huaihai West Road, Xuhui district. Tel: (021) 6431-1075 or (021) 6431-1075 (hotline).

Stephan Bodzin

This Geman techno DJ and label owner is bringing his firebrand style of electronic music to Arkham in what promises to be a memorable event. He started off composing music for European theaters before getting involved in techno eight years ago. He has since remixed the likes of Depeche Mode.

10pm, Saturday, Aug 2, Arkham, 1 Wulumuqi Road, near Hengshan Road, Xuhui district. Mobile: 137-0197-2878.

Wagner: RingCycle

If you’re lucky there may still be tickets left for the concluding part of the Metropolitan Opera House’s rendition of Der Ring des Nibelungen, Wagner’s magnum opus. You’ve probably already missed Die Walkurie, but Gotterdammerung plays today — in high-definition. Tickets cost from 50-100 yuan.

3 pm, Aug 2 and 3, Shanghai Grand Theatre, 300 People’s Avenue, near Huangpi North Road, Huangpu. Tel: (021) 6386-8686 or 6372-8702.

Pink Pool Party

Flex your pecs or flash your new bikini at one of the hottest pool parties in town. Last weekend saw crowds of around 200 people at any given time to swim, dance to soft beats, sip cocktails and sample the snack menu at the Shangri-La Pudong’s pink-themed iKandy Ultralounge on the Outdoor Terrace of its Grand Tower. Entry costs 150 yuan and includes a glass of Mumm champagne.

11 am – 8 pm Sundays, Shangri-La Pudong, 33 Fucheng Road, near Yincheng East Road. Tel: (021) 6882-8888, email: fbreservation.slpu@shangri-la.com

Chill out on Chongmingdao

Organic farms, a natural forest park and the recently opened Hyatt Regency make China’s third-largest island a tempting day trip or weekend away. Enjoy bird watching at Dong Tan Migratory Bird Protection Area, and catch crabs and cycle before dining on fresh river fish and local treats at the Hyatt’s Pin Yue restaurant. The hotel can also organize for you to play farmer for a day.

Hyatt Regency Chongming, Lane 799, Lanhai Road, Chenjia Town. Tel: (021) 6703-1234.
