Canada: one parent stays at home
Since a nanny is too expensive for many families to afford, and there is also no tradition of asking the grandparents for help, parents have no choice but to pick one spouse to take care of their children. A "full-time father" is not a new concept in Canada. Early in 2002, 110,000 men had taken the role on and the number continues to rise. However, in the 1950's it was a strange idea for a man to abandon one's job, and to stay at home seemed a privilege for women.
