Zhang Ziyi chose Children's Day earlier this week to make good on her promise to open a center for orphans and vagrants' kids in earthquake torn Deyang, Sichuan province.
The actress tearfully announced that $400,000 from her foundation would go toward the center that is being set up by the United Kingdom organization Care for Children.
Zhang has faced severe criticism for not doing enough to help earthquake victims after she led a fundraising drive at the Cannes Film Festival two years ago. She has apologized and said the mistakes were due to her inexperience.
Another of China's leading ladies, Fan Bingbing, appears determined to capitalize on her recent Cannes Film Festival appearance, when she wore a "dragon gown" on the red carpet and caused a minor sensation.
This month she is the cover girl for men's fashion magazine Esquire China, dressed up as Elvis Presley, Superman, Bruce Lee and Che Guevara. She was reported as saying: "There's a man living in my body."
While the Bruce Lee look is sexy, Superman powerful and her Elvis iconic, the Che Guevara photos have been getting a lot of coverage, not all of it positive: "This, is the ugliest cover in Esquire's history," one netizen commented on Esquire's micro blog.
In an article carried by Sina.com, Edison Chen said he is a changed man and wants to settle down, get married and have kids in the next 10 years.
The all-round entertainer was rocked by a sex photo scandal two years ago and had to retire from the Hong Kong entertainment industry as a result. He has recently been trying to get his career back on track with appearances in Taiwan and on the mainland.
Entirely unconnected with Chen, but equally keen to put her past behind her is Wang Luodan, who told SMweekly that she narrowly escaped appearing in an X-rated film after she became well known in the TV series Struggle (Fen Dou).
She said the producer of the movie insisted on her involvement and only backed down after she said she would appear only if he agreed to take on the role of leading man.
On another occasion she said a jealous rival, or someone who had been put out by something she said, threatened to break her arm. Obviously, there's no business tougher than show biz.
"My parents have been so worried about me since I entered entertainment circles," she said.
Finally, model Angelababy and entertainer Huang Xiaoming were caught on a date in Beijing recently. Despite the couple's attempts to be low-key - which included wearing a mask and pretending they didn't know each other - a photographer snapped them together.
The dashing Huang immediately went up to the man and offered to buy the pictures. Since they haven't appeared on websites or in print, it looks like he was successful. We are all wondering how much the paparazzo was paid and if it was enough to retire on.
